Small Burlap Pumpkin

Project Sheet: cd946

Materials

• ¼ yard muslin

• 1 Roll Orange Burlap (or ¼ yard burlap of your choice)

• ¼ Yard Brown Corduroy

• Dark brown embroidery floss

• Polyfil

Directions

1. Cut 6 of pumpkin pattern from the muslin. Sew the muslin together from top to bottom, when sewing the last side closed only sew half way up. Stuff the pumpkin with polyfil, then slip stitch the side that was left open. You should have a circle hole at both the top and bottom; this is where you will insert the stem.

2. Cut 6 of the pumpkin pattern from the orange burlap. With 3 strands of embroidery floss, sew ‘X’s down the center of three of the pumpkin sides. Sew the sides together alternating a plane side with an embroidered side. Do not sew the final seam; rather slip the stuffed muslin pumpkin into its burlap jacket. Then slip stitch the last side together. (Slip stitching burlap is difficult, instead you could hot glue the last side closed.) Using embroidering floss take long gathering stitches around the outside of the hole at bottom of the burlap pumpkin. Pull up snuggly and knot. (If you desire you may use a little hot glue to secure the threads on the inside.)

3. Cut a piece of Corduroy 9 x 12. Fold to be 9 x 6. Then, with the fold being the top, fold accordion style to create the stem. At the center-3 inches from top-use floss to tack accordion in place, then wrap the floss around the stem several times, creating an inch or two long wrapped section. Take one more stitch and knot off. With fingers create a hollow section in the pumpkin and then stick the stem down inside.

4. Cut two pumpkin leaves from the remainder of the brown corduroy. Cut out the center as shown on pattern. Slip these leaves over the stem and rest them on the top of the pumpkin. Push top center of pumpkin down slightly and hot glue the leaves to the stem. To give more dimension to the leaves, pucker them slightly and then hot glue in place.
